Dive Scylla
The former Royal Navy frigate, HMS Scylla, started her new role in life
as a reef, in Whitsand Bay, south east Cornwall in March 2004. Scylla
was built in the Devonport Royal Dockyard and we are delighted to welcome
her back to the region, where she provides a fantastic venue for both
diving and marine research as well as benefiting the local economy.
High Environmental Standards
In order to prepare Scylla for the seabed; the National Marine Aquarium
followed the strict guidelines laid down by various environmental bodies
to ensure there was no risk to the environment. The National Marine Aquarium
ensured that the highest practical standards were achieved prior to her
placement.
Dive and Discover
Divers can access her superstructure, and all 4 decks. The diving highlights
include the captain's cabin, the bridge, living accommodation, mess decks,
galley, operations room and the engine room. Those who do not dive can
explore the underwater world on the webcams at the National Marine Aquarium
and on the Aquarium's website: www.national-aquarium.co.uk
Who will be the first to move in?
Eels will be the first to move in and in no time at all bass, john dory,
mackerel, pollack, sea fans, dead man's fingers and scad are likely to
have made her their new home. The colonisation process will be closely
monitored for research purposes.
A Star in the Dive World
She is a star in the dive world already, much loved by her Navy crews,
fondly regarded by the ship's builders and we are sure she will be much
loved by Aquarium visitors and all who are connected with her in someway
in her future.
A special 'Friends of Scylla' scheme has been set up for those who wish
to be kept up to date with newsletters and contribute to her upkeep.
